England Secure 5-0 Whitewash ODI Victory

It is one of the most famous rivalries in the world of sport, shrouded in history from the Ashes to ODIs, when these two great cricketing nations meet, the world watches on expectantly.

This year’s ODI series, which concluded this weekend, was no different. Australia may have not taken their best squad to the UK for this series, but that does not mean the rivalry was any less fierce. Without preferred bowlers of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins due to injury, the side clearly struggled.

However, no one could have anticipated just how well England would play. On the final day on Sunday the team secured a famous 5-0 whitewash win over the Aussies, the first time the team had ever defeated the side by such a significant margin.

Undoubtedly the star of the show on the final day was batsman Jos Butler. He scored an incredible 110 unbeaten, achieving his sixth ODI century. England were only chasing 206 and Adil Rashid contributed a score of 81 before being dismissed.

The final day victory wasn’t the only history England made in the series, the third match at Trent Bridge saw them score a world record of 481-6 with a 242-run victory. Their previous record was a 444-3 score which they set against Pakistan in 2016, also at Trent Bridge.

At one stage it looked like England may well pass the 500 mark as Alex Hales smashed 147 and Jonny Bairstow hit 139. Australia were bowled out for 239 and Adil Rashid impressed taking 4-47.

Perhaps the biggest threat to England’s wickets on the final day came in the form of Billy Stanlake. The young bowler’s brave style of bowling caught out Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and ODI captain Eoin Morgan but England survived this scare to go on to comfortably win the match and complete the whitewash.

This incredible performance has seen many people discuss whether England are currently the best team in world cricket, with many people tipping them to go far in the Cricket World Cup which will be hosted in the UK in 2019.

Next up for England is a one of T20 clash again against Australia, before T20 series gets underway against India.
